The Central Bank of the Republic of Turkey (Türkiye Cumhuriyet Merkez Bankası) issued the 1,000 lira banknote (Pick 196) on December 17, 1979, as part of the E 6 Emission Group, Series II. This series was introduced to meet the increasing demand for higher denomination banknotes during a period of economic change.

The obverse features a portrait of President Mustafa Kemal Atatürk on the right side. The reverse displays a view of the Bosphorus in Istanbul.
