About this banknote
The Bulgarian National Bank issued the 1 lev banknote (Pick 114a) on July 5, 1999, as part of the currency redenomination that took effect on that date. This redenomination introduced the fourth lev, replacing the previous lev at a rate of 1,000:1.
The obverse features a 1789 icon of St. Ivan Rilski from the Uspenie Bogorodichno Church near the Rila Monastery, accompanied by a holographic stripe with rhomboid elements on the left. The reverse depicts the main church of the Rila Monastery. The banknote was printed by the Bulgarian National Bank Printing House in Sofia and was demonetized on December 31, 2015.
