About this banknote
The Bank of Zambia issued the 1 kwacha banknote in 1969 as part of its inaugural currency series following the country's adoption of the kwacha in 1968. This series replaced the Zambian pound, aligning with the decimalization efforts initiated by the Decimal Currency Act of 1966.
The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of President Kenneth Kaunda on the right and the national coat of arms at the upper center. The reverse depicts a farmer plowing a field with a tractor, accompanied by two farmers plowing with oxen. The watermark is a portrait of President Kaunda. This note was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co. Limited and bears the signature of Justin B. Zulu, who served as Governor of the Bank of Zambia from 1967 to 1970.
