About this banknote
The Bank of Ghana issued the 1 cedi banknote (Pick 37) on July 1, 2007, as part of the country's currency redenomination exercise. This initiative aimed to simplify transactions by introducing the Ghana cedi (GHS) at an exchange rate of 1 new cedi to 10,000 old cedis.
The front of the note features the "Big Six" leaders of Ghana's independence movement: Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta. Also depicted are the Independence Arch in Accra, a star, and the national coat of arms. The reverse showcases the Akosombo Dam and a stack of gold bars. The note measures 137 x 65 mm and was printed by De La Rue.
