Banknotes of South Africa

The official currency of South Africa is the rand (ZAR), issued by the South African Reserve Bank. Paper money was first introduced in South Africa in 1782, when the Dutch East India Company issued notes for the Cape Colony. In 1994, following the end of apartheid, the country underwent a major currency redesign, introducing a series featuring prominent South African figures and events. Collectors are particularly drawn to South Africa's banknotes for their vibrant colors and intricate security features, such as watermarks and color-shifting ink. The 1992 series is especially noteworthy, as it was the first to depict Nelson Mandela and included a distinctive polymer note, reflecting advances in banknote technology and design.
