Banknotes of Namibia

The official currency of Namibia is the Namibian dollar (NAD), issued by the Bank of Namibia, established in 1990. Paper money was first introduced in Namibia shortly after its independence in 1990, replacing the South African rand. A significant reform occurred in 2012 when a new series of banknotes was issued featuring enhanced security features and updated designs, including the incorporation of local wildlife. Collectors of Namibian banknotes are drawn to the striking designs that highlight the country’s unique flora and fauna. The 200-dollar note, for example, showcases the majestic African elephant, while the reverse features the country’s national flower, the welwitschia. This focus on indigenous elements distinguishes Namibian currency, making it appealing to both local and international collectors.
