The official currency of Cambodia is the Cambodian riel, issued by the National Bank of Cambodia. Paper money was first introduced in the country around 1980, following years of turmoil characterized by the Khmer Rouge regime. A significant change occurred in 1993 when the riel was redenominated at a rate of 1,000 old riel to 1 new riel.
Collectors are drawn to Cambodia's banknotes due to their vibrant colors and intricate designs. One appealing feature is the depiction of historical landmarks, such as the Angkor Wat temple complex, which appears on several series. The various issues showcase a blend of traditional and contemporary art, highlighting different aspects of Cambodian life and history.
