The Banca d'Italia issued the 50,000 lire banknote series from 1984 to 1990. This series was introduced on February 6, 1984, during the tenure of Governor Carlo Azeglio Ciampi and Cashier Speziali.
The obverse features Gian Lorenzo Bernini's portrait on the right and the Fontana del Tritone in Rome at the left center. The reverse displays the Scala Regia in Vatican City on the left and an equestrian statue at the left center. The banknote measures 149 × 70 mm and was demonetized on February 28, 2002.
