About this banknote
The Sveriges Riksbank issued the 500-kronor banknote in 2001, featuring the signatures of Sven Hulterström and Urban Bäckström. This series was introduced to enhance security features, including a foil hologram and copying protection, in response to a peak in banknote counterfeiting in 2000.
The front of the banknote displays a portrait of King Carl XI, based on David Klöcker Ehrenstrahl's 1682 painting depicting the king at the Battle of Lund in 1676. The reverse features an image of Christopher Polhem, known as the father of Swedish engineering, along with mathematical calculations from his notebooks, the Falu copper mine with one of his ore hauling plants, and a gear wheel from his industrial plant in Dalarna. The watermark is a portrait of King Carl XI.
