About this banknote
The Banque de l'Algérie et de la Tunisie issued the 500 franc banknote (Pick 106) between 1950 and 1956. This series was introduced to standardize currency across Algeria and Tunisia during the French colonial period. The note dated 26 October 1955 bears the signatures of Antoine Civier, General Cashier, and Pierre Gandy, Secretary General.
The obverse features a central depiction of a ram and an effigy of Bacchus to the right. The reverse presents a mosaic of men cutting down trees. The watermark displays the profile of a Moorish woman within a square medallion. Designed by Eugène Robert Poughéon, the obverse was engraved by Armanelli, and the reverse by Camille Beltrand. The note measures 162 x 83 mm and was printed by the Banque de France in Paris.
