About this banknote
The Bank of Guatemala issued the 50 centavos de quetzal banknote on August 28, 1996. This series was introduced to replace earlier designs and was printed by Harrison & Sons Limited in the United Kingdom.
The obverse features a portrait of Tecún Umán, a national hero, with the authorization date "28 AGOSTO 1996" and the denomination "CINCUENTA CENTAVOS DE QUETZAL" inscribed. The reverse depicts Temple I of Tikal, an iconic Mayan structure. This banknote was demonetized on January 6, 1997, and subsequently replaced by a coin of the same denomination.
