About this banknote
The Bank of Ghana issued the 50 cedis banknote (Pick 41a) on July 1, 2007, as part of the country's currency re-denomination exercise. This initiative, announced by Governor Dr. Paul A. Acquah in November 2006 and gazetted on March 23, 2007, aimed to simplify transactions by introducing the Ghana cedi (GH¢) at an exchange rate of 10,000 old cedis to 1 new cedi.
The obverse of the note features front-facing busts of Ghana's "Big Six" leaders: Kwame Nkrumah, Ebenezer Ako-Adjei, Edward Akufo-Addo, Joseph Boakye Danquah, Emmanuel Obetsebi-Lamptey, and William Ofori Atta. The Independence Arch is centrally positioned, with the national coat of arms below and a star to the left. A square hologram is situated beneath the portraits. The reverse depicts Christianborg Castle, the seat of government. Printed by De La Rue, the note measures 153 x 77 mm and was demonetized on September 30, 2020.
