About this banknote
The Central Bank of Kenya issued the 5 Shillings banknote (Pick number 15) on July 1, 1978. This series was introduced during the presidency of Jomo Kenyatta, who served as Kenya's first president from 1964 until his death in August 1978. The note was withdrawn shortly after Kenyatta's death and was reissued between December 1993 and January 1994 due to a currency shortage.
The obverse features a right-facing portrait of President Jomo Kenyatta on the left, with the denomination "5" and the text "BANKI KUU YA KENYA" and "CENTRAL BANK OF KENYA" in the center. The reverse depicts a woman harvesting coffee, with a coffee plantation and Mount Kenya in the background. The banknote measures 134 x 70 mm and was printed by Bradbury Wilkinson and Company in the United Kingdom.
