About this banknote
The National Bank of Egypt issued the 5-pound banknote (Pick 31) between 1952 and 1960. This series was introduced following the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, during which the monarchy was overthrown and Egypt was declared a republic.
The front of the banknote features a dark green, gray-blue, and brown color scheme, with an image of Tutankhamun's mask on the right and the Muhammad Ali Pasha Mosque (also known as the Alabaster Mosque) in Cairo on the left. The reverse side displays an allegorical figure representing the River Nile, accompanied by a sphinx and cherubim, inspired by a statue from the Vatican Museum in Rome. The watermark is a lotus flower. This particular note, dated 1955, bears the signature of Ahmed Zaky Saad, who served as the governor of the National Bank of Egypt during that period.
