The Banque de l'Algérie issued the 5 Nouveaux Francs banknote in 1959, following the French currency reform that introduced the "nouveau franc" on January 1, 1960. This reform revalued the franc at 100 old francs to 1 new franc, necessitating the issuance of new banknotes to reflect the updated currency system.
The front of the banknote features a ram at the bottom center and Bacchus, the Roman god of wine, at the right.
