The Banco Central de Costa Rica issued this 5 colones banknote in 1980. This series was part of Costa Rica's efforts to modernize its currency design and security features during this period. The front side of the banknote depicts a portrait of Rafael Iglesias Castro, a notable figure in Costa Rican history, alongside an orchid flower.
