About this banknote
The Banco de México issued this 20-peso commemorative banknote on January 6, 2021, to mark the bicentennial of Mexico's independence from Spain. The note features a fragment of the artwork titled "Solemn and Peaceful Entry of the Army of the Three Guarantees into Mexico City on September 27 of the Memorable Year 1821," attributed to an anonymous artist.
The obverse displays the aforementioned artwork, with the flag of the Army of the Three Guarantees on the left and the Mexican flag on the right. The reverse, oriented vertically, depicts the mangrove ecosystem of the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, featuring a Mexican crocodile (Crocodylus moreletii) and a roseate spoonbill (Platalea ajaja). This polymer banknote measures 120 x 65 mm and was recognized as the Best New Commemorative Banknote in Latin America by the High Security Printing conference in 2021.
