About this banknote
The Banco de México issued the 20 pesos banknote (Pick 64a) on December 29, 1972, with a total production of 50,000,000 notes. This series was introduced to replace earlier designs and to incorporate updated security features.
The obverse features a portrait of José María Morelos y Pavón, a leader in Mexico's War of Independence, alongside two buildings from Morelia, Michoacán. To the left is Morelos's emblem—a bow with an arrow and the letters "SUD"—and at the bottom right, a sword. The reverse depicts the Pyramid of Quetzalcoatl in Teotihuacan, with a sculpted head of Quetzalcoatl on the right margin and a snake design along the bottom. This banknote was demonetized on January 1, 1996.
