The Banque de l'Algérie issued the 20 franc banknote on June 4, 1948. This note was part of a series introduced during the French colonial period to facilitate economic transactions in Algeria.

The obverse features a polychrome design predominantly in yellow and green, with a frame and background composed of ornamentations and arabesques. The issuing institute's name, "BANQUE DE L'ALGÉRIE," the denomination "VINGT FRANCS," numbering, signatures, and the date of issue are printed in black. At the center, the value "20" appears in white within a green medallion. Below, Article 139 of the Penal Code is printed on three lines. The reverse displays values in numbers and letters, along with "BANK OF ALGERIA" translated into Arabic. The note measures 109 × 68 mm and was designed by Mohamed Salah Khamassi.
