The National Bank of Belgium issued the 20 franc banknote (Pick 98) in 1931, as part of a series introduced on April 14, 1926, and continued until January 27, 1940. This series was implemented to standardize Belgium's currency during King Albert I's reign.
The obverse features conjoined profiles of King Albert I and Queen Elisabeth on the left, with a border incorporating symbols such as a torch, blindfolded Justice, scales, lyre, artist’s palette, hammer, cog, anvil, beehive, sickle, caduceus, ship, railroad engine, and winged helmet. The reverse displays a cornucopia, a medallion of Hermes, the Grand-Place in Brussels, scales, and the coat of arms. The note measures 137 x 82 mm and was printed by the National Bank of Belgium.
