The Central Bank of Kenya issued the 100 shilling banknote on July 1, 1978. This series was introduced during the presidency of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who served as Kenya's first president from 1964 until his death on August 22, 1978.
The front of the banknote features a portrait of President Jomo Kenyatta on the left side, with the country's coat of arms centrally placed. The reverse side displays the Kenyatta International Conference Centre in Nairobi, including the seated Kenyatta statue and the tower. The banknote measures 157 x 81 mm and includes a lion's head watermark. It was printed by Thomas De La Rue & Co.
