About this banknote
The Casa da Moeda de Portugal issued the 100 réis banknote in 1891, following the decree of August 6, 1891. This issuance was prompted by the financial crisis resulting from the bankruptcy of Banco do Povo and Banco Lusitano, which led to a scarcity of bronze coins and necessitated the introduction of paper currency for small denominations.
The obverse of the note features a brown design with a curtain, a man seated on an anvil to the left, and cherubs to the right. The reverse displays a gray design with the Portuguese coat of arms centered within a circle. The note measures 92 x 64 mm and was demonetized in 1931.
