This series was introduced following the establishment of the Banco de Guatemala in 1946, which took over the issuance of the national currency from the Banco Central de Guatemala.

The obverse features a round stone carving known as the Ara de Tikal on the left and a quetzal bird in flight above the denomination at the center right. The reverse depicts a scene representing the founding of Antigua Guatemala.
