The National Bank of Azerbaijan issued the 1 manat banknote in 2005 as part of the "New Manat" series, which was introduced on January 1, 2006. This series was designed by Robert Kalina and printed by Oesterreichische Banknoten- und Sicherheitsdruck GmbH in Vienna, Austria.
The front of the banknote features traditional Azerbaijani musical instruments: the daf drum, kamancha, and tar, set against a background of ancient carpet patterns. The reverse displays a map representing Azerbaijan's integration into Europe, accompanied by national ornaments. The banknote measures 120 x 70 mm and includes a watermark of a fire bud.
