About this banknote
The Banco de Portugal issued the 1 escudo banknote on June 25, 1920, as part of the 1913–1918 regular issue series. This series was introduced following the establishment of the Portuguese Republic in 1910 and the subsequent currency reform in 1911, which replaced the real with the escudo at a rate of 1,000 réis to 1 escudo.
The obverse of the banknote features a seated allegorical woman holding a book, symbolizing Literature, with the coat of arms of the Portuguese Republic at the top center. The reverse depicts another allegorical figure, a woman playing a lyre, representing Poetry. The banknote measures 125 x 82 mm and includes a watermark of an allegorical head. It was printed by the British firm Bradbury, Wilkinson & Co., though the printer's imprint is absent.
