The National Bank of Poland (Narodowy Bank Polski) issued the 500 zlotych banknote in 1948 as part of a new series introduced on July 1, 1948. This series was designed by Polish artist Wacław Borowski and aimed to modernize the nation's currency following World War II.
The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of a miner wearing a helmet, with the White Eagle emblem without a crown to the left. The reverse depicts miners extracting coal in a mine, based on authentic photographs and sketches. The watermark presents the head of a girl facing right. This banknote remained in circulation for 27 years without changes to its design, signatures, or date, marking a record in Polish banking history.
