The Banque de France issued the 20 francs "Bayard" banknote series from 1916 to 1919. This series was introduced on January 1, 1917, during World War I, to replace the previous 20 francs "bleu-bistre" note. The design was created by Georges Duval and Romagnol.

The front of the note features a portrait of Pierre Terrail, Chevalier de Bayard, with his chivalrous motto "Sans peur et sans reproche" ("Without fear and without reproach"). The back depicts a farmer holding a scythe. The note measures 160 x 95 mm and is printed in light brown on paper. The printing was executed by the firm Imprimerie B. Arnaud in Lyon and Paris.
