The Banque de France issued the 1000 francs "Déesse Déméter" banknote between May 28, 1942, and January 20, 1944. This series was introduced during the French State period (1940–1944) and was demonetized on June 4, 1945.
The obverse features a statue of Demeter with the infant Hercules on her lap, set against a Provençal landscape with a shepherd and goats. The reverse depicts a statue of Mercury, scenes from Hercules' labors, and the port and city of Rouen in the background. The banknote measures 190 x 115 mm and includes a watermark of Hermes' head at the center.
