The National Bank of Romania (Banca Națională a României) issued the 5000 lei banknote in May 1993 as part of the 1991-1994 series. This series was introduced during Romania's transition to a market economy following the fall of the communist regime in 1989.
The obverse features Avram Iancu (1824–1872) at the right, a square-topped shield at the left center, and a church at the center. The reverse depicts a church at the left, the gate of Alba Iulia stronghold at the left center, and a seal at the center right. The watermark is a portrait of Avram Iancu. This banknote was demonetized on April 1, 1999.
