The National Bank of Poland issued this commemorative series on October 16, 2006, to honor Pope John Paul II. This series was introduced to mark significant moments related to the Pope, coinciding with the anniversary of his election to the papacy on this date in 1978.
The front of the 50 zlotych note features Pope John Paul II at the center, blessing, with a background world map. To the left, he is depicted seated, kissing the hand of Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski.
