The Danmarks Nationalbank issued the 5 kroner banknote in 1944 as part of the "Ombytningsserien" (Exchange Series), also known as the "Matadorsedlerne" (Matador Notes). This series was introduced on July 23, 1945, under Law No. 352 of July 22, 1945, to replace existing currency.

The front of the note features the denomination "5" prominently in the center, with "KRO/NER" on either side, surrounded by intricate viking-inspired designs. The back displays the Danish national coat of arms within a guilloche pattern. Measuring 129 x 72 mm, the note was printed using letterpress techniques, resulting in a tactile impression on the paper.
