The Banca d'Italia issued the 2,000 lire banknote on October 24, 1990, following the Ministerial Decree of October 3, 1990. This series was introduced to honor Guglielmo Marconi, the Italian inventor renowned for developing long-distance radio transmission.

The obverse features a portrait of Marconi on the right and the emblem of the Four Maritime Republics—Amalfi, Genoa, Pisa, and Venice—at the center. The reverse displays Marconi's yacht "Elettra" and radio telegraph towers. The banknote measures 119 x 61 mm and was printed by the Officina della Banca d'Italia.
