The Banque de France issued the 200 francs "Montesquieu" banknote series from 1981 to 1994. This series was introduced on July 7, 1982, to replace the previous 200 francs note featuring Victor Hugo. The note was demonetized on April 1, 1998.

The front of the banknote features a portrait of Charles de Montesquieu on the right and a figure with a staff on the left. The reverse side depicts Montesquieu and the Château de la Brède, his birthplace. The note measures 172 x 92 mm and is predominantly blue-green with yellow and multicolored accents. The watermark features Charles de Montesquieu.
